Course at a glance
Introduction
The Level 3 Diploma is specifically designed for those aspiring to develop their knowledge 20th century History. Whether you want to learn about History just to satisfy for your own curiosity or intend to develop your studies at a higher level this is the course for you.
The course is subdivided into 10 units with each unit investigating a different aspect of History. In this course you will learn about British, Russian and American History from the 1920s until the end of the Cold War, with key historical figures covered by the course include Churchill, Stalin, Kennedy and Reagan.
Upon completion of each unit in the course the student will be provided with an assignment, based upon short questions and answers or essay questions, to test the understanding of the course presented. This will enable the tutor to offer guidance and feedback to show how well the student has understood the content of each unit. The assignments don’t count toward the final grade as the course will be assessed by online examination.

Level 3 History Diploma Entry Requirements
All students must be 16 years of age and above to enrol onto our Level 3 History Diploma course.
Level 3 Diploma courses require a minimum prior learning to GCSE standard in order that students can manage their studies and the assumed knowledge within course content.

Course Content
Level 3 History Diploma Unit 1: Stalin Part 1
In this unit you will explore the struggle for power to the leadership of the USSR. We will see how Stalin rose to power in 1924-29 and his clashes with other personalities and the direction of policies during these years.
We will also examine how Stalin managed to transform the Soviet Union into a superpower. We will explore the policies used to collectivise agriculture and its social and economic impact and consequences of these policies
Level 3 History Diploma Unit 2: Stalin Part 2
Within this unit you will explore how the USSR was rapidly industrialised through the three five year plans and the impact of all these policies especially on Soviet society.
Stalin’s USSR is famed for its stringent controls and persecution of individuals and groups. We will consider the origins and course of these purges as well as the development of culture and the arts in the service of a totalitarian regime.
Level 3 History Diploma Unit 3: USA 1968-2001 : Part 1
Through this unit you will consider the Presidencies of Nixon, Ford, Carter, Reagan, Bush and Clinton. We will explore the reasons for the outcomes of elections that led to these presidents being elected. We will also look at Watergate and the constitutional issues to which it gave rise.
Level 3 History Diploma Unit 4: USA 1968- 2001: Part 2
Here you will explore social issues and their political impact in the USA in these years. Issues such as feminism, the rights of minorities, religious belief and the importance of the Supreme Court will be investigated.
Level 3 History Diploma Unit 5: British Political History : Part 1
In this unit you will learn about the Labour election victory of 1945, why did Labour win and the key features of domestic policy of the Labour governments of 1945-51. We will also consider the extent to which the immediate post war years were ‘an age of austerity’. We will also explore the Conservative governments of 1951-64 and consider the extent to which the Conservatives maintained continuity with Labour objectives.
Level 3 History Diploma Unit 6: British Political History : Part 2
Linking units 5 and 6 together you will explore the presentation of the factors that led to the Conservative election victory of 1979. We will also investigate the key features and policies of the Thatcher government.
Level 3 History Diploma Unit 7: Superpower Relations 1944-1990 : Part 1.1
Here you review development of Great Britain, the USA and the USSR in the 20th century we turn our attention to international affairs in the wake of the Second World War. In the final group of modules we will investigate the Cold War and the relations between the Superpowers of the USSR and the USA.
Level 3 History Diploma Unit 8: Superpower Relations 1944-1990 : Part 1.2
Within this unit again linking with the above unit you will review development of Great Britain, the USA and the USSR in the 20th century we turn our attention to international affairs in the wake of the Second World War. In the final group of modules we will investigate the Cold War and the relations between the Superpowers of the USSR and the USA.
Level 3 History Diploma Unit 9: Superpower Relations 1944-1990 : Part 2.1
This unit is linked with unit 7 through to ten. You will cover the post-Stalin thaw after the death of Stalin and the bid for peaceful coexistence between the USA and the USSR. We will look at key individuals of this period including Khrushchev, Dulles and Eisenhower.
Level 3 History Diploma Unit 10: Superpower Relations 1944-1990 : Part 2.2
In this final unit having already reviewed a lot of history covering Superpower Relations between 1944 – 1990 from part 1.1 to 2.2 you will now explore the arms race and the development during the years of 1949-63 of nuclear weaponry and the increasing sophistication of delivery systems to ensure that these weapons would have a global reach. We will examine this escalation and the key crisis point dealt with by Kennedy during the Cuban missile crisis and the resulting realisation that the USSR and the USA needed to negotiate back from this brink. You will summarise your course by gaining knowledge of Détente between the years 1969-1980 and how negotiations between the USA and the USSR led to the Strategic Arms Limitation Talks (SALT) and agreement such as the Helsinki Accords.

This Level 3 History Diploma can be used to gain entry to a Level 4+5 Diploma or higher.
