Unconventional Learning Adventures During Christmas Break and Relaxing into New Year Goals

The traditional concept of holiday breaks often revolves around relaxation, but a paradigm shift towards blending leisure with learning has gained traction. Unconventional learning adventures during the Christmas break can provide a unique and enriching experience for students. We caught up with Dr Deborah Coombe, Director of Canadian Open Learning College (COLC), and Dr Emily Turner, a member of the Canadian Education Quorum (CEQ) about holiday education and travel last week in Claridge’s Hotel, Mayfair, London, UK.

Dr Coombe, emphasises the importance of diverse learning experiences, stating, “Traveling during the holiday break offers students a chance to learn beyond textbooks, fostering a deeper understanding of different cultures and histories.
In Norway, a country steeped in Nordic wisdom, the local government supports educational initiatives during the holiday season. The Norwegian Ministry of Education encourages students to engage in winter science workshops, explore historical sites, and partake in local traditions.” Dr Coombe continues, “Norway’s commitment to providing educational opportunities even during the holidays aligns with the philosophy of continuous learning.
Copenhagen beckons with its architectural marvels, and the Danish Ministry of Culture promotes educational tourism during the Christmas break. Copenhagen’s rich history and architectural significance make it a living classroom. Students can benefit from guided tours of landmarks, cultural exhibitions, and language immersion experiences, gaining knowledge in an immersive and enjoyable setting.
Belgium, known for its art and history, encourages students to explore its cultural heritage. The Belgian government supports initiatives such as museum visits, art galleries, historical site tours, and interactive workshops.”
Lucy Wycliff, the Superior Officer at AccordAI International Examination Board who sat in for a few questions, highlights, “Exposure to different cultures and histories broadens a student’s perspective and contributes to their overall development.”
Dr Coombe continued, “Zurich, a financial and cultural hub, offers unique educational opportunities. The Swiss Federal Department of Finance supports financial literacy workshops and cultural performances during the holiday season. Be aware that Zurich is quite expensive so if you are on a budget, it is probably not the best option.

Portugal, with its maritime history, offers educational experiences endorsed by the Portuguese Ministry of Education. Portugal’s focus on maritime education aligns with the global perspective we aim to provide at Canadian Open Learning College. Students can explore maritime museums, participate in navigation workshops, and engage in cultural exchanges with locals. Local treasures such as tiles and old wooden carvings which display throughout towns with everyday ease are notable as ordinary occurrences in doors and window treatments. It is truly a treasure chest of authentic culture whilst it boasts the surfing giants of Nazare, Peniche, and Ericeira as all year destinations. “
Reflect and Reset: Goal Setting for the New Year
Reflection and goal-setting form a crucial aspect of personal and academic development. The Canadian Education Quorum (CEQ) advocates for thoughtful reflection, with Dr Emily Turner stating, “Reflection allows students to appreciate their accomplishments and challenges, providing a foundation for setting meaningful goals.”
In collaboration with local educational authorities, the Canadian government encourages students to reflect on their achievements. The Canadian Ministry of Education suggests reflection prompts encompassing academic successes, personal challenges, and extracurricular accomplishments. Dr Coombe emphasises, “Reflecting on achievements is a powerful tool for self-awareness and growth. Don’t wait for acknowledgement or ask for permission, move forward regardless.”
Setting realistic academic goals is vital for long-term success. The Canadian Education Quorum provides guidance on formulating goals that are specific, measurable, and relevant. Dr Turner explains, “Clear academic goals set during the holiday break can serve as a roadmap for the upcoming year, helping students stay focused and motivated.”
Personal development goals, endorsed by Lucy Wycliff of AccordAI International Examination Board, extend beyond academics. The Canadian government encourages students to consider health and well-being, interpersonal skills, and leadership development in their goal-setting. Lucy notes, “A holistic approach to goal-setting ensures students are well-rounded individuals, prepared for the challenges of the future.”
Tech-Free Holidays and Relaxation Offline
Unplugging from screens and embracing offline activities is essential for a balanced holiday break. The Canadian Ministry of Health supports nature retreats and mindfulness as part of a holistic well-being approach. Dr Coombe states, “The Canadian government works well beyond remit endorsing relaxation and recuperation during the holiday season with the recommendations of spending time in nature and practicing mindfulness which contributes to mental and emotional well-being, enhancing the overall quality of the holiday break.”

Creative DIY projects offer a unique way to relax offline. The Canadian Ministry of Culture endorses hands-on activities such as art and craft, science experiments, and cooking. Lucy emphasizes, “Engaging in creative projects not only provides a break from technology but also stimulates the mind and encourages a sense of accomplishment.” Dr Coombe indicated the end of the interview.
In conclusion, a well-balanced holiday break involves a harmonious blend of unconventional learning adventures, thoughtful reflection, and offline relaxation. The collaborative efforts of local governments, educational institutions, and professionals contribute to creating a holistic and enriching experience for students during the Christmas vacation period.
