Introduction
The Level 3 Zoology Diploma provides a comprehensive study of animal life, exploring how animals have evolved from simple single-celled organisms to the complex species we see today. This course covers topics such as animal diversity, evolution, and behaviour, offering insights into the vast and interconnected world of zoology, from ancient origins to modern ecological concerns.
Upon completion of each unit in the course the student will be provided with an assignment, based upon short questions and answers or essay questions, to test the understanding of the course presented. This will enable the tutor to offer guidance and feedback to show how well the student has understood the content of each unit. The assignments don’t count toward the final grade as the course will be assessed by online examination.
Level 3 Zoology Diploma Entry Requirements
All students must be 16 years of age and above to enrol onto our Level 3 Zoology Diploma course.
Level 3 Diploma courses require a minimum prior learning to GCSE standard in order that students can manage their studies and the assumed knowledge within course content.

Level 3 Zoology Diploma Course Content
Unit 1: Introduction to Zoology
This unit introduces zoology, exploring the origins of life from inorganic molecules to single-celled organisms and then multicellular animals. Students study the cell as the building block of life, including its structure, functions, and cellular processes like mitosis and metabolism.
Unit 2: Animal Development and Evolution
This unit examines the development of genetic theory, evolution, and reproduction, with an overview of genetics at both the cellular and whole-animal levels. It covers evolutionary theories pre- and post-Darwin and discusses how animals develop from zygote to adult.
Unit 3: Animal Diversity – Simple Animals
This unit explores the diversity of simpler animal forms, from unicellular organisms to multicellular animals like sponges and jellyfish. Topics include the various levels of body organisation and taxonomic classifications that help organise these species.
Unit 4: Animal Diversity – Complex Invertebrates
This unit looks at complex invertebrates, including molluscs, annelids, arthropods, echinoderms, and hemichordates. The unique characteristics of these groups are discussed in the context of evolutionary history.
Unit 5: Animal Diversity – The First Vertebrates
This unit focuses on vertebrates, including the evolution of backbones and the development of fishes and early land-dwelling vertebrates. The unit discusses the life cycles and evolutionary adaptations that enabled these animals to transition from water to land.
Unit 6: Animal Diversity – Complex Vertebrates
This unit examines how vertebrates adapted to land, including the evolution of the amniotic egg in reptiles, and explores the connections between birds and reptiles. Topics like avian flight, migration, and navigation are also discussed.
Unit 7: Animal Diversity – Mammals
Mammals are explored in detail, covering their evolution, structural and functional adaptations, and classification. The unit also looks at human evolution and the diversity of mammalian life, from small bats to large marine mammals.
Unit 8: Animal Activity – Body, Senses, and Movement
This unit focuses on animal life processes, including body support, movement, and sensory adaptations. It covers the structure of skeletal systems, muscle function, and sensory processing within the nervous system.
Unit 9: Animal Activity – Maintaining the Internal Environment
Students learn about homeostasis and the processes animals use to regulate their internal environments. Topics include osmoregulation, temperature regulation, and immune responses, as well as the roles of organs like kidneys, lungs, and the skin.
Unit 10: Animals and Their Environment
The final unit explores animal behaviour and interactions with the environment, including social behaviours, communication, and distribution patterns. Topics include predator-prey relationships, ecology, and the global distribution of animals across different habitats.
Progression
This Level 3 Zoology Diploma can be used to gain entry to a Level 4+5 Diploma or higher.
